What GlyNAC is
GlyNAC is a combination of glycine and N-acetylcysteine (NAC). Glycine is the simplest amino acid. NAC is a precursor to glutathione, the body's primary endogenous antioxidant. Both are inexpensive, widely available, and not proprietary. You can buy them separately for a few dollars per month.
What the trial found
A Baylor University trial found that GlyNAC supplementation reversed 9 of the 12 classical hallmarks of aging in older adults. The hallmarks reversed included oxidative stress, mitochondrial dysfunction, and inflammation. This is one of the few human trials to directly measure aging hallmarks as endpoints rather than clinical outcomes like mortality or disease incidence.
GlyNAC is two cheap amino acids, not a proprietary compound. The price barrier to testing it yourself is near zero.
What the hallmarks actually mean
The 12 hallmarks of aging are a framework from a 2013 Cell paper that defined the cellular and molecular processes that drive aging. They include genomic instability, telomere attrition, epigenetic alterations, loss of proteostasis, deregulated nutrient sensing, mitochondrial dysfunction, cellular senescence, stem cell exhaustion, altered intercellular communication, chronic inflammation, and others.
Reversing a hallmark is not the same as reversing aging. A hallmark is a mechanistic marker, not a clinical outcome. Reversing oxidative stress in a blood sample does not mean you will live longer or avoid disease. But it is a stronger signal than most supplement research provides, which usually measures nothing mechanistic at all.
What we don't know
- Sample size was not specified in the source material.
- Duration of supplementation was not specified.
- Dose of glycine and NAC was not specified.
- Clinical outcomes (mortality, disease, function) were not measured.
- Replication in an independent cohort has not been done.
Why the price matters
Glycine costs roughly $5-10 per month at typical doses (3g/day). NAC costs roughly $5-10 per month at typical doses (600mg/day). Together, GlyNAC costs under $20 per month. Compare this to NMN at $30-60 per month, or NR at $40-80 per month. If GlyNAC produces comparable or superior effects on aging hallmarks, the cost-benefit calculation changes significantly.
