Effects of chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla L.) on sleep: A systematic review and meta-analysis of clinical trials
Summary Can chamomile help people sleep better? Show / hide ↓
Researchers combined results from several clinical trials testing chamomile products for sleep. The studies included adults with sleep problems, including some older adults and women after childbirth. People took chamomile as tea, capsules, or another preparation and were compared with people taking a placebo or receiving usual care. Overall, chamomile was linked with a small improvement in reported sleep quality. The studies did not clearly show that it helped people sleep longer or fall asleep faster.
What this means for you: Chamomile may provide a modest sleep benefit, but the evidence is limited by small studies, different products, and short follow-up. It is reasonable to try as a low-cost tea if it is safe for you, but do not rely on it to treat ongoing insomnia.
