The TAME Trial for Metformin Remains Only Partially Funded
PRIMARY
2024
Summary Has metformin been proven to slow aging in healthy older adults? Show / hide ↓
The TAME trial is a planned human study of metformin, a prescription diabetes drug. It would compare about 3,000 older adults taking metformin with people taking a placebo, an inactive look-alike pill. Researchers would check whether metformin delays several age-related illnesses, rather than simply adding years to life. As of 2024, the trial was only partly funded, so it had not produced results.
What this means for you: Do not buy or take metformin for longevity based on this trial. The key test has not yet been completed, and metformin can cause side effects and may not be suitable for everyone.
