SRT1720, SRT2183, SRT1460, and resveratrol are not direct activators of SIRT1
Summary Do popular longevity compounds directly switch on the SIRT1 protein? Show / hide ↓
Researchers tested resveratrol and three related compounds in laboratory test tubes containing purified SIRT1, a protein linked to cell health and aging research. They compared normal protein targets with targets carrying a fluorescent tag, a glowing chemical label used to measure activity. The compounds seemed to boost SIRT1 only when the tag was present, not with normal untagged targets. This suggests the earlier activation result came from the testing method, not true direct activation. No people or animals took part.
What this means for you: This study weakens claims that these compounds improve health by directly activating SIRT1. It is reasonable not to buy a product based on this mechanism alone, although this study did not test the compounds’ broader health effects.
