Inflammatory markers in population studies of aging
PRIMARY
2013
Summary Do signs of inflammation in the blood predict poorer aging? Show / hide ↓
This review brought together results from population studies of adults, especially older adults. Researchers measured inflammatory markers, blood signals such as C-reactive protein and interleukin-6. Higher levels were often linked with frailty, disability, illness, and earlier death. Most studies were observational, meaning researchers watched people without assigning treatments, so they could not prove inflammation caused these problems.
What this means for you: This suggests inflammation can be a warning sign, but it does not show that buying an anti-inflammatory supplement or treatment will help you live longer. You can ignore marketing claims that rely only on these links.
