Redox-regulating sirtuins in aging, caloric restriction, and exercise

Radak Z et al.

PRIMARY 2013
Summary Can sirtuins explain how exercise and eating less might slow aging? Show / hide ↓

Researchers reviewed earlier studies rather than testing one group of people. They examined sirtuins, proteins that help cells respond to stress, and redox balance, the balance between damaging and protective chemical reactions. The research included cells, animals, and some human studies of exercise and eating fewer calories. These studies suggested that sirtuins may change with aging, exercise, and calorie restriction, but the results did not prove that they extend human life.

What this means for you: This does not show that sirtuin supplements or strict dieting will make people live longer. Regular exercise may still be sensible, but this review cannot tell you to buy a sirtuin product or follow a specific calorie-restricted diet.
