Curcumin and cognition: a randomised, placebo-controlled, double-blind study of community-dwelling older adults
Summary Can curcumin supplements improve memory in healthy older adults? Show / hide ↓
Researchers randomly gave 60 healthy adults aged 60 to 85 either a daily curcumin capsule or a look-alike placebo, an inactive treatment, for 12 weeks. The participants lived independently and took computer tests of memory and attention. Those taking curcumin did somewhat better on some tests of working memory and attention. They also reported some mood improvements and had lower levels of certain blood fats. The study was small and lasted only three months.
What this means for you: This is not strong enough evidence to buy curcumin for better memory or dementia prevention. It suggests a possible short-term benefit, but larger and longer studies are needed.
