Stem cell aging: mechanisms, regulators and therapeutic opportunities

Ren R et al.

PRIMARY 2017
Summary How does aging affect stem cells, and could treatments slow that damage? Show / hide ↓

Researchers reviewed existing studies about stem cells, which are cells that can renew themselves and make other cell types. They examined how aging changes these cells and the body systems that control them. The review also discussed possible treatments, including medicines and changes to the cells’ surroundings. Much of the evidence came from laboratory cells and animals, not from people in clinical trials.

What this means for you: This review does not show that any stem-cell treatment can extend human life or reverse aging. Do not buy a product based on these ideas alone; the treatments remain experimental.
