Telomere Length and All-Cause Mortality: A Meta-analysis
META-ANALYSIS
2018
Summary Do shorter telomeres mean a higher chance of dying? Show / hide ↓
Researchers combined results from dozens of studies involving tens of thousands of adults. They compared people with shorter telomeres, protective ends on chromosomes, with people who had longer telomeres. People with shorter telomeres were more likely to die during the follow-up periods. However, these studies mostly found a link, not proof that short telomeres caused earlier death.
What this means for you: This does not show that buying a telomere test or supplement will help you live longer. Telomere length may partly reflect overall health and aging, but it is not a reliable personal fortune-teller.
