Acarbose improves health and lifespan in aging HET3 mice
PRECLINICAL
2019
Summary Can acarbose help mice stay healthier and live longer? Show / hide ↓
Researchers gave aging HET3 mice, a genetically diverse group of laboratory mice, regular food or food containing acarbose. Acarbose is a prescription drug that slows the digestion of some carbohydrates. The treated mice generally had better blood-sugar control, fewer signs of age-related decline, and lived longer than untreated mice. The benefits were larger in male mice than female mice.
What this means for you: This is interesting mouse research, but it does not show that acarbose extends human life. Do not take acarbose for longevity unless a doctor prescribes it for a medical reason.
