Summary Can a natural body chemical help older animals live longer? Show / hide ↓

Researchers gave older laboratory mice alpha-ketoglutarate, a substance cells naturally make while producing energy. They compared mice given the substance in their drinking water with similar untreated mice. The treated mice had a median lifespan about 12% longer. They also showed fewer signs of frailty, meaning weakness and loss of physical ability, and stayed healthier for longer.

What this means for you: This was a study in mice, so it does not directly show that alpha-ketoglutarate helps humans live longer. You can ignore this study as a reason to buy a supplement, because human benefits, ideal doses, and long-term safety remain unclear.
