Mitochondrial Dysfunction and Alpha-Lipoic Acid: Beneficial or Harmful in Alzheimer's Disease?
Summary Does alpha-lipoic acid help or harm people with Alzheimer’s disease? Show / hide ↓
Researchers reviewed studies on alpha-lipoic acid, a natural compound also sold as a supplement, and Alzheimer’s disease. They focused on mitochondria, the parts of cells that produce energy, and on oxidative stress, a type of cell damage. Most evidence came from laboratory cells and animals, with limited evidence from people. Some studies suggested alpha-lipoic acid might protect brain cells, while others raised concerns that it could worsen certain types of damage. The review did not prove that it prevents, treats, or causes Alzheimer’s disease.
What this means for you: This review does not provide a good reason to buy alpha-lipoic acid for Alzheimer’s disease. Human benefits and risks remain uncertain, so it should not replace proven medical care.
