Study
Proteostasis collapse is a driver of cell aging and death
Summary Does losing protein quality control cause cells to age and die? Show / hide ↓
The researchers studied individual yeast cells grown in the laboratory, not people. They tracked proteostasis, the cell’s system for making, folding, and clearing proteins. As some cells aged, this system suddenly failed, causing damaged proteins to build up. Cells with this collapse were more likely to stop growing and die. The work also tested ways to support protein quality control and found that protecting it could delay these problems.
What this means for you: This is useful basic research, but it does not show that a supplement, diet, or treatment can slow human aging. You can ignore this study when deciding what to buy, because the findings came from yeast cells and do not directly apply to humans.
