Alpha-Ketoglutarate, an Endogenous Metabolite, Extends Lifespan and Compresses Morbidity in Aging Mice
Summary Can a natural body chemical help older mice live longer and healthier? Show / hide ↓
Researchers gave calcium alpha-ketoglutarate, a supplement form of a chemical cells normally make, to mice starting at about 18 months old. They compared the treated mice with similar untreated mice and tracked how long they lived and how healthy they stayed. Treated mice lived about 12% longer and showed fewer signs of frailty, such as weakness and poor movement. This was an animal study, not a human trial, so the results do not directly apply to people.
What this means for you: This does not show that buying an alpha-ketoglutarate supplement will extend human life. It is an interesting early result, but human benefits, safe doses, and long-term risks are still unknown.
