Autophagy in healthy aging and disease

Aman Y et al.

PRIMARY 2021
Summary How does cellular recycling affect aging and age-related disease? Show / hide ↓

This was a review of earlier research, not a new experiment. The researchers examined autophagy, the process cells use to recycle damaged parts, in human studies, animals, and lab-grown cells. They looked at how this process changes with age and may relate to diseases. Some findings came from mice and cells, so they do not directly prove benefits for humans.

What this means for you: This review does not show that buying an autophagy supplement, fasting, or taking another product will extend your life. It supports the importance of cell cleanup, but the best way to safely increase it in people is still uncertain.
