Functional Role of Taurine in Aging and Cardiovascular Health (review, section 4: Taurine and Aging)
Summary Can taurine slow aging or improve heart health? Show / hide ↓
This section reviewed earlier research on taurine, a substance made naturally by the body and found in some foods. It included studies in worms, mice, monkeys, and people, rather than one new group of participants. Taurine levels often fell with age, and giving taurine to older animals improved some measures of health and extended lifespan in mice. Human studies mainly found links between taurine levels and health, so they cannot prove that taurine supplements cause these benefits.
What this means for you: This review does not show that taurine supplements slow aging or prevent heart disease in people. You do not need to buy taurine for longevity based on this evidence, especially because the strongest results came from animals.
