Alpha-lipoic acid for diabetic peripheral neuropathy

Baicus C et al.

PRIMARY 2024
Summary Can alpha-lipoic acid relieve nerve pain caused by diabetes? Show / hide ↓

Researchers tested alpha-lipoic acid, an antioxidant supplement, in adults with diabetes-related peripheral neuropathy, meaning nerve damage usually affecting the feet and legs. They compared people taking the supplement with people receiving a placebo or another treatment. The supplement appeared to reduce symptoms such as burning, tingling, and pain for some people. The studies were generally short, so they did not show whether it prevents lasting nerve damage or disability.

What this means for you: Alpha-lipoic acid may provide modest short-term symptom relief, but it is not a proven treatment for the underlying nerve damage. Do not rely on it instead of controlling blood sugar and following medical advice, and discuss it with a clinician before buying it.
