Taurine may not be a useful biomarker for aging after all

PRIMARY 2025
Summary Does taurine in the blood reliably show how old someone is? Show / hide ↓

Researchers measured taurine, a substance the body makes naturally, in blood samples from people of different ages. They looked at whether taurine could act as a biomarker, meaning a measurable sign of aging. Taurine levels did not consistently fall as people got older. This challenges earlier research that suggested taurine drops sharply with age.

What this means for you: Do not buy taurine supplements just to slow aging based on this study. It suggests taurine is not a dependable age test, and it did not test whether supplements improve health or lifespan.
