Benefits of Metformin in Attenuating the Hallmarks of Aging

Kulkarni AS, Gubbi S, Barzilai N

PRIMARY 2020
Summary Can metformin slow the biological changes that come with aging? Show / hide ↓

This 2020 review examined research on metformin, a medicine used mainly to treat type 2 diabetes. It looked at laboratory studies, animal studies, and some human research about whether metformin affects the biological changes linked to aging. The findings suggest possible effects on inflammation, metabolism, and cell damage, but the human evidence was limited and mixed. This was not a new treatment trial, so it could not show that metformin helps healthy people live longer.

What this means for you: Do not buy or take metformin for aging based on this review alone. It is a prescription medicine with possible risks, and stronger human trials are needed.
