Study
An investigation into the stress-relieving and pharmacological actions of an ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) extract: A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study
Summary Can ashwagandha supplements reduce stress and anxiety in adults? Show / hide ↓
Researchers gave 60 adults who reported high stress either an ashwagandha extract or a placebo, a look-alike pill with no active ingredient. The study lasted 8 weeks, and neither the participants nor researchers knew who received which treatment until the end. People taking ashwagandha reported less stress and anxiety than those taking the placebo. Their stress-hormone levels, including cortisol, also fell more, although the study was small and short.
What this means for you: Ashwagandha may help some adults with short-term stress, but this single small study is not enough to prove reliable benefits. It is reasonable to wait for stronger evidence rather than buy it specifically for stress relief.
