Broccoli or Sulforaphane: Is It the Source or Dose That Matters?
Summary Does eating broccoli work as well as taking a sulforaphane supplement? Show / hide ↓
Researchers compared broccoli with purified sulforaphane, a natural chemical made when broccoli is digested. Healthy adults consumed different amounts, and the researchers measured sulforaphane-related chemicals in their blood and urine. Both broccoli and the supplement increased these chemicals, but the amount depended strongly on the dose and how the broccoli was prepared. The study measured short-term body markers, not longer life or protection from disease.
What this means for you: Eating broccoli can provide sulforaphane, but this study does not show that supplements improve health more than ordinary food. You do not need to buy a supplement based on this evidence alone.
