Effects of Collagen Supplements on Skin Aging: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials
Summary Do collagen supplements really reduce wrinkles and other signs of skin aging? Show / hide ↓
Researchers combined results from 23 randomized controlled trials, studies that compare a treatment with a placebo or another control. The trials included 1,474 adults who took collagen supplements or a comparison product for varying lengths of time. Looking at all studies together, collagen appeared to slightly improve skin moisture, firmness, and wrinkles. However, the better-designed studies and those without supplement-company funding generally found no clear benefit.
What this means for you: The overall results are mixed, and the strongest studies do not show a reliable benefit. Collagen supplements are not a well-supported purchase for preventing or reversing skin aging.
