FOXO3 and Exceptional Longevity: Insights From Hydra to Humans

PRIMARY 2020
Summary Does the FOXO3 gene help explain why some people live exceptionally long lives? Show / hide ↓

Researchers reviewed studies of FOXO3, a gene that helps cells respond to stress and control repair, energy use, and cleanup. They looked at evidence from hydra, worms, flies, mice, and human populations. Some versions of the gene were linked with reaching very old age in several human studies. Animal and cell findings suggest possible reasons, but they do not directly prove the same effects in people. The review was not a new experiment and did not test a treatment or supplement.

What this means for you: This does not show that buying a FOXO3-related supplement or changing one habit will extend your life. The gene may be one small part of healthy aging, alongside many other genetic and lifestyle factors.
