Study

Insulin/IGF-1 signaling and longevity

Kenyon C

PRIMARY 2010
Summary Can lowering insulin signals help animals live longer? Show / hide ↓

Researchers changed insulin and IGF-1 signaling, chemical messages that help control growth and energy use, in laboratory animals. They then compared how long the animals lived with animals whose signals were unchanged. Lower signaling extended lifespan in some animals, including roundworms. The animals also showed changes in stress resistance and metabolism. These were animal experiments, not tests in people.

What this means for you: This does not show that lowering insulin or IGF-1 will help people live longer. Do not buy supplements or change medication based on this study, especially because these signals also perform important jobs in the body.
