Summary Do particular genes help some people live much longer? Show / hide ↓
Researchers compared DNA, the body’s genetic instruction code, from people who lived to 100 or more with DNA from younger adults. They looked for gene variants, meaning small inherited differences in DNA, that were more common in the exceptionally old group. They found that long life was linked to many genetic differences rather than one clear “longevity gene.” Lifestyle and chance also appeared to matter greatly.
What this means for you: This does not justify buying a genetic test, supplement, or treatment to extend life. It suggests that genes play a part, but they cannot reliably predict how long most people will live.
