Chronic inflammation in the etiology of disease across the life span
Summary Can long-lasting inflammation help cause disease as we age? Show / hide ↓
Researchers reviewed findings from many studies about inflammation and health throughout life. The evidence included people, as well as animal and cell research, so not every finding directly applies to humans. They found that ongoing inflammation, meaning the immune system stays partly switched on, is linked to diseases such as heart disease, cancer, diabetes, and dementia. The review also described links with aging, but it could not prove that inflammation alone causes these diseases.
What this means for you: This is background evidence, not proof that an anti-inflammatory supplement or treatment will extend life. Do not buy products claiming to “stop inflammation” based on this review alone; proven health habits remain more reliable.
