Excess Apolipoprotein B and Cardiovascular Risk in Women and Men
Summary Does having extra ApoB raise heart disease risk in women and men? Show / hide ↓
Researchers studied blood-test and health data from more than 300,000 middle-aged adults in the UK. They measured apolipoprotein B, or ApoB, a protein that counts many cholesterol-carrying particles linked to artery disease. They compared each person’s ApoB level with the amount expected from their usual cholesterol levels, then followed participants for new heart and blood-vessel problems. People with more ApoB than expected had a higher risk of cardiovascular disease, including heart attacks, in both women and men. This was an observational study, so it found a link but cannot prove that extra ApoB directly caused the problems.
What this means for you: This does not show that buying an ApoB-targeted supplement will prevent heart disease. It supports discussing ApoB and standard cholesterol results with a clinician, especially when they do not tell the same story, but treatment decisions should consider overall risk and other evidence.
