Study
Caloric restriction and its mimetics in aging
Summary Can eating fewer calories or taking similar compounds slow aging? Show / hide ↓
Researchers reviewed studies of calorie restriction, meaning eating fewer calories without missing essential nutrients, and “mimetics,” compounds that may produce some of the same body changes. Most evidence came from yeast, worms, flies, mice, and other animals, with fewer studies in people. Lower calorie intake often improved health and extended life in animals, but human results were smaller and less certain. Some compounds showed promise in laboratory studies, but they were not proven to extend human life and may have side effects.
What this means for you: Eating a balanced diet and avoiding excess calories may support health, but there is not enough evidence to recommend severe calorie restriction or buying supplements marketed as calorie-restriction mimetics. This review does not prove that any pill can slow human aging.
