Aging and the aggregating proteome

David DC

PRIMARY 2012
Summary Does aging make ordinary proteins clump together throughout the body? Show / hide ↓

Researchers studied young and old roundworms, not people, and looked for proteins that had clumped together. They used mass spectrometry, a laboratory method for identifying proteins, to compare the worms at different ages. Protein clumping increased as the worms grew older and affected many normal proteins, not just proteins linked to disease. Worms with longer-lasting aging patterns showed less of this buildup.

What this means for you: This suggests that protein clumping is a normal part of aging, but it does not show that a supplement or diet can prevent it in people. You can ignore products making strong claims based on this study alone.
