Trajectories of Gait Speed Predict Mortality in Well-Functioning Older Adults: The Health, Aging and Body Composition Study
Summary Does getting slower at walking predict a shorter life? Show / hide ↓
Researchers tracked about 2,400 generally healthy adults aged 70 to 79 for several years. They measured walking speed repeatedly and grouped people by their walking patterns, including stable speed and noticeable slowing. The people whose walking speed declined were more likely to die during the follow-up period than those who stayed faster. This was an observational study, meaning it found a link but could not prove that slower walking caused earlier death.
What this means for you: Walking speed can be a useful, simple sign of overall health, but this study does not show that buying a device, supplement, or training program will extend life. A noticeable decline in walking ability is worth discussing with a health professional, especially because many treatable problems can affect it.
