HIIT versus MICT in older adults: a comprehensive meta-analysis
Summary Is hard interval exercise better than steady exercise for older adults? Show / hide ↓
Researchers combined results from studies comparing high-intensity interval training, or HIIT, with moderate-intensity continuous training, or MICT, in older adults. HIIT involves short bursts of harder exercise followed by easier periods, while MICT means exercising steadily at a moderate pace. Both types of exercise generally improved fitness and physical function. HIIT did not consistently produce better results than steady moderate exercise, and the studies varied in their exercises, schedules, and participants.
What this means for you: You do not need to buy a special HIIT program to gain exercise benefits. Choose the pace and routine you can do safely and regularly, especially because this review cannot fully show which approach is safest for every older person.
