META-ANALYSIS 2024
Summary Can magnesium improve memory and thinking in adults? Show / hide ↓

Researchers combined results from studies of adults that examined magnesium and mental abilities such as memory and thinking. The studies measured magnesium in different ways, including food intake, supplements, or blood levels. They also used different tests to measure cognitive health, meaning memory and thinking ability. Overall, the results did not show a clear and reliable benefit from higher magnesium levels or intake.

What this means for you: This review does not give a strong reason to buy magnesium supplements for memory or thinking. Magnesium may still be important for general health, but this analysis does not prove that taking extra improves cognition.
