Effects of Coenzyme Q10 on Statin-Induced Myopathy: An Updated Meta-Analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials
RCT
2018
Summary Can CoQ10 reduce muscle problems caused by statin cholesterol medicines? Show / hide ↓
Researchers combined results from 12 randomized controlled trials, studies in which people were assigned by chance to receive CoQ10 or a comparison treatment. The trials included 575 adults taking statins who reported muscle symptoms. People taking CoQ10 generally reported less muscle pain, weakness, cramping, and tiredness. CoQ10 did not clearly lower creatine kinase, a blood marker of muscle damage.
What this means for you: CoQ10 might ease some statin-related muscle symptoms, but the studies were generally small and used different methods. Do not stop a statin or buy CoQ10 without discussing the symptoms and options with a healthcare professional.
