Therapeutic plasma exchange with IVIG reduces epigenetic biological age: a placebo-controlled trial
Summary Can removing and replacing blood plasma make people biologically younger? Show / hide ↓
Researchers tested therapeutic plasma exchange, a procedure that removes the liquid part of blood and replaces it, together with IVIG, donated antibodies from many people. Adults were randomly assigned to receive this treatment or a placebo, an inactive comparison treatment. The treated group showed lower readings on some epigenetic age tests, which estimate aging from chemical marks on DNA. These tests do not show that people lived longer, looked younger, or became healthier, and the study details do not establish whether the changes last.
What this means for you: This is not a reason to buy IVIG or undergo plasma exchange. The treatment is invasive, costly, and carries risks, while the evidence only shows a change in laboratory estimates of age.
