Tai Chi and Qigong for health: a review of systematic reviews

META-ANALYSIS 2022
Summary Can tai chi or qigong improve health and help people live better? Show / hide ↓

Researchers reviewed many earlier systematic reviews, which are studies that combine results from several trials. The earlier studies included adults with different health problems, as well as generally healthy older adults. Tai chi and qigong, slow exercises that combine movement, breathing, and attention, often improved balance, movement, mood, sleep, pain, and quality of life. Some studies also found small improvements in blood pressure and other health measures, but results varied and many studies were not strong enough to give firm answers.

What this means for you: Tai chi or qigong may be worthwhile as gentle exercise, especially for balance, movement, and general well-being. This review does not show that either practice prevents disease or extends life, and the evidence is uneven.
