Summary Do DNA changes in our body cells help cause cancer and aging? Show / hide ↓
Researchers reviewed evidence about somatic mutations, which are DNA changes that happen in body cells after conception. They studied findings from human tissues and laboratory animals, rather than testing a treatment in volunteers. The review examined genome mosaicism, meaning that different cells in the same body can carry different DNA. It found that these changes build up with age and can contribute to cancer, but their role in ordinary aging was still uncertain.
What this means for you: This does not show that a particular supplement, diet, or treatment can prevent these mutations. You can ignore products making such claims based on this research alone.
