PRIMARY 2022
Summary Does being fitter lower the risk of dying earlier? Show / hide ↓

This article is a reply to comments about earlier research on cardiorespiratory fitness, meaning how well the heart and lungs support exercise. It did not test a new group of people or run a new experiment. Instead, the authors discussed how previous studies measured fitness and death risk. Those studies generally found that people with better fitness tended to live longer, but they could not prove that fitness alone caused the difference.

What this means for you: This is a discussion of existing evidence, not a new test of a fitness program or product. Regular activity is reasonable for health, but this article alone cannot show how much exercise someone needs or guarantee a longer life.
