Targeting Cellular Senescence for Healthy Aging
PRIMARY
2024
Summary Can removing worn-out cells help people age more healthily? Show / hide ↓
This article reviewed research on cellular senescence, a state where damaged cells stop dividing but can release signals that promote inflammation. It examined “senolytics,” treatments designed to remove these worn-out cells, and other ways to reduce their harmful effects. The evidence came mainly from laboratory studies and animals, with only limited research in people. No new group of human participants was tested in this article.
What this means for you: This is not enough evidence to buy a senolytic supplement or treatment for general healthy aging. The idea is promising, but its benefits and risks for people remain uncertain.
