Senolytics in idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis: results from a first-in-human, open-label, pilot study
Summary Can senolytic drugs improve physical function in people with lung scarring? Show / hide ↓
Researchers tested dasatinib and quercetin, drugs intended to remove worn-out cells, in 14 older adults with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, a disease that scars the lungs. Participants took the drugs three days a week for three weeks. They improved on some physical tests, including walking and rising from a chair. Lung measurements did not clearly improve. The study had no untreated comparison group and was too small and short to show whether the treatment slows the disease or helps people live longer.
What this means for you: This does not support buying or taking senolytic supplements or drugs for lung scarring. It was a small, uncontrolled first test, so larger studies are needed before the treatment can be recommended.
