Summary Can certain plant chemicals help yeast cells live longer? Show / hide ↓

Researchers tested resveratrol and other small chemicals on purified sirtuins, proteins involved in cell aging. They also gave the chemicals to yeast cells, a type of fungus used in laboratory aging studies. The treated yeast cells produced new cells for up to 70% longer than untreated cells. This effect depended on Sir2, a yeast sirtuin protein.

What this means for you: This was a yeast study, not a human study, so it does not show that resveratrol supplements or similar products extend human life. You can ignore this as a reason to buy a supplement.
