Genome-wide detection of somatic mutation and copy number alteration by single-molecule analysis
Summary Can scientists spot DNA damage across the entire genome in individual cells? Show / hide ↓
Researchers tested a laboratory method that reads individual DNA molecules instead of a mixture of many molecules. It searched across the whole set of DNA instructions for somatic mutations, changes that arise in some cells during life, and copy-number alterations, when a DNA region is repeated or missing. They tested the method on laboratory DNA and cell samples, rather than giving a treatment to people. The study asked whether the method could detect these changes accurately, not whether it could prevent them.
