Summary Is steady exercise or interval training better for women’s fitness? Show / hide ↓

Researchers compared moderate-intensity continuous training, meaning steady exercise at a manageable pace, with interval training, which alternates harder and easier periods. Women took part in the study and completed one of these exercise programs. The researchers measured VO2max, the maximum amount of oxygen the body can use during exercise. The study found whether one approach improved this fitness measure more than the other, but it does not show which workout helps people live longer.

What this means for you: Both types of exercise may be reasonable choices for improving fitness. This study is not enough to justify buying special equipment or claiming that one style is best for everyone.
