Study
Age-stratified associations between sleep duration and mortality
Summary Does the right amount of sleep for health change as we age? Show / hide ↓
Researchers followed a large group of adults and compared their usual sleep time with later deaths. Sleep was reported by the participants, rather than measured in a sleep laboratory. Short and long sleep were linked with higher death rates in some age groups, but the pattern differed by age. Because this was an observational study, it could not show that sleep duration caused those deaths. Other health problems or lifestyle factors may have influenced both sleep and longevity.
What this means for you: This does not show that you should buy a sleep product or force yourself to sleep a precise number of hours. Aim for regular, refreshing sleep, and discuss persistent sleep problems with a health professional. The results are useful clues, but they do not prove a particular sleep duration will extend your life.
