Yeast sirtuins and the regulation of aging

Wierman MB, Smith JS

PRECLINICAL 2014
Summary How might yeast proteins called sirtuins affect the aging process? Show / hide ↓

This was a review of laboratory research on yeast, a single-celled fungus. The researchers examined sirtuins, proteins that help control genes and how cells respond to stress. The studies suggested that some sirtuins can help yeast cells live longer or handle damage better. No people or animals participated, so the findings come only from cells in the laboratory.

What this means for you: This may help scientists understand aging, but it does not show that sirtuin supplements or other products extend human life. You can ignore claims based on this study alone.
