Study
An epigenetic biomarker of aging for lifespan and healthspan
Summary Can a blood test estimate how quickly someone is aging? Show / hide ↓
Researchers studied thousands of adults and combined age with nine health measures, such as blood sugar, kidney function, inflammation, and blood-cell counts. They then examined DNA methylation, chemical tags that help control how genes work, at hundreds of sites in blood cells. This produced an aging score called an epigenetic biomarker, meaning a biological sign linked to aging. People with higher scores were more likely to die earlier and develop health problems during follow-up. The study observed links and did not test whether lowering the score improves health or lifespan.
What this means for you: This may help researchers identify people at higher health risk, but it is not a proven personal aging test. Do not buy supplements or treatments based on this score, since the study did not show that changing it extends life.
