PRIMARY 2016
Summary Can metformin slow aging and help people live healthier longer? Show / hide ↓

This paper reviewed animal studies and human health records about metformin, a medicine used to treat type 2 diabetes. Some studies in mice suggested that metformin might extend lifespan and delay diseases linked to aging. Records from people with diabetes also showed links between metformin use and better health outcomes, but these studies could not prove that metformin caused the benefits. The paper did not test metformin as an anti-aging treatment in a human clinical trial.

What this means for you: This paper is not evidence that healthy people should take metformin for aging. It supports further research, but the possible benefits and risks for people without diabetes were still uncertain.
