ApoB is the only independent driver of lipid-associated MI risk
Summary Which blood-fat measure best predicts the risk of a heart attack? Show / hide ↓
Researchers used inherited genetic differences to test whether different blood fats affect heart attack risk. This method, called Mendelian randomization, can suggest cause and effect but is not a treatment trial. They compared apolipoprotein B, or ApoB, a protein that reflects the number of cholesterol-carrying particles, with LDL cholesterol, often called bad cholesterol, triglycerides, and HDL cholesterol, often called good cholesterol. When the measures were considered together, only ApoB remained independently linked to heart attack risk.
What this means for you: This supports paying attention to ApoB as a useful measure of harmful cholesterol-carrying particles. It does not prove that treating ApoB alone is better than established cholesterol treatment, and it gives no reason to buy a specific supplement or product.
