Study
A metabolite produced by the body increases lifespan and dramatically compresses late-life morbidity in mice

Summary Can a natural body chemical help older animals live longer and stay healthier? Show / hide ↓
Researchers gave alpha-ketoglutarate, a chemical naturally made during energy production, to middle-aged mice in their drinking water. The mice started treatment at about 18 months old and were compared with mice that did not receive it. Treated mice lived about 12% longer and showed fewer signs of frailty, such as poor movement and reduced strength. This was a mouse study, so it does not directly show the same effects in humans.
What this means for you: This is not a reason to buy alpha-ketoglutarate supplements for longer life. The findings are interesting but need to be tested in people, including for safety and effective doses.
