EFSA Panel on Dietetic Products, Nutrition and Allergies

PRIMARY 2017
Summary Is PQQ disodium salt safe to use as a food supplement? Show / hide ↓

Researchers reviewed laboratory tests, animal studies, and human safety information for PQQ disodium salt, a form of pyrroloquinoline quinone. They did not run a new trial with participants. The European food safety reviewers found no safety concern for healthy adults at the proposed intake of up to 20 milligrams a day. The review did not prove that PQQ improves energy, health, or lifespan, and it provided limited information about children, pregnancy, or long-term use.

What this means for you: PQQ appears reasonably safe at the studied proposed amount for healthy adults, but this review does not show that it provides meaningful health or longevity benefits. There is not enough information to assume the same safety for children, pregnancy, or higher doses.
