Effects of intermittent fasting on health, aging, and disease

PRIMARY 2019
Summary Can intermittent fasting improve health, slow aging, or prevent disease? Show / hide ↓

This article reviewed studies of intermittent fasting, which means regularly going without food for set periods. It included research in animals, such as mice, and shorter studies in people. Some studies found possible improvements in weight, blood sugar, blood pressure, and signs linked with aging. However, the human studies were generally small or short, and it was unclear whether fasting itself helped more than simply eating fewer calories.

What this means for you: Intermittent fasting may help some people lose weight and improve certain health measures, but this review does not prove that it slows aging or prevents disease. You do not need to buy special products, and long-term benefits and risks remain uncertain.
